EMERGENCE - EMERGENCY
(Note from the translator: The Spanish word ‘emergencia’ is used to refer to the meanings of both ‘emergence’ and ‘emergency’ in English). From its semantic approach, the title-word refers both to the fact of staying afloat, surfaced, as well as to the notion of accident or catastrophe.
The emergence of the remains of a P-38 aircraft on a remote beach after 65 years of its disappearance and the recent media image around the world, seduce the imagination to a temporary re-signification of the exhibition room.
The plane buried on the beach emerges from the sea, emerges from the past and is seen for a few days before disappearing under the sand by experts who seek to rescue it as a museum piece and who reserve the coordinates of the remote site in Wales.
From the aesthetic and conceptual re-elaboration of the renown image of pieces of the aircraft that appear and disappear in the sand, the proposal seeks to recreate the illusion of a temporary appearance of the remnants of the P-38 in the art room.
By use of the real dimensions of the wing of the plane in the exhibition room that welcomes the piece, thus creating a new perception, a new meaning for both room and aircraft that become museum art piece, transforming themselves into new aesthetic realities that involve the viewer and are revealing of expanded senses about relevant events that emerge from the past to make part of today’s globalized world.

The still image of the remnants of the P-38 that emerges to scale on the surface of the art room floor is complemented with the moving image -projected on the vertical surface- of the tide from a distant beach.
The appearance of the compound set during a short period of time and its imminent disappearance uphold its condition as ephemeral landscape, its notion of transient and perishable.
The sound of the sea is heard in the distance...

Emergency, subtly and inevitably evokes the last flight of the P-38 in which Antoine de Saint- Exupery -author of ‘The little prince’- disappeared, perhaps in the Mediterranean or in some remote beach.

The context of the events of the P-38 is expanded without affecting the visual immateriality of the room by the screening of small documentaries of high visual and emotional impact, creating a subtle background to its wandering, while original sounds of the time are heard as distant echoes.
From another approach in the room, a symbolic time tunnel (ramp dividing the room) descends towards a more immediate presence in a screen video that invites you to come forward.

The dimensions of the marine debris from the aircraft between the water and the sand and the tide in perpetual motion, are transformed as the viewer walks up from one level to the next, until at the highest possible point of view in the room it is possible to refer back to the original perception of the vestiges of the p-38 emergence, as captured by a camera from another aircraft in flight.

After the time of emergence of the aircraft in the room finishes, the piece itself also disappears and plunges back into the memories of an aesthetic experience.
